Efficiently Mapping Cleanups for the Public

—Lisa Jenkins, US EPA

Part of EPA's mission involves cleaning up, or protecting human health and the environment against exposure to, hazardous materials at specific locations, and helping put the land back into productive/green community uses. Cleanups in My Community (CIMC) pulls information about cleanups from several environmental programs - each with its own information requirements, stakeholders, and data sources - and creates a cohesive web-based GIS the public can use to find out about envirionmental cleanups across the country, and identify opportunities for community enrichment.

The initial version of CIMC had grown into a complex application full of lots of custom code and had become very expensive to maintain. This new version uses ArcGIS Server, Bing, and Business Intelligence software to allow CIMC users to define their "community" of interest, filter on types of cleanups, and drill down to specific reports about those cleanups. Collaborative development of CIMC was facilitated by the use of Apex.
