Facility Management for GIS

—Robert Hallett, USDOT / Volpe

The Volpe National Transportation Systems Center and the FAA developed a pilot GIS system to assist the management of FAA's Unstaffed Infrastructure Sustainment (UIS) facilities. The pilot uses GIS to assist in the tracking of a variety of facility maintenance activities and life-cycle elements at UIS facilities at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. The FAA UIS program office compiles assessment data into a database collected from field teams during routine facility assessments. The GIS pilot is a web based application that incorporates the assessment data so an end user can use it to view the locations of UIS facilities based on a variety of criteria, such as type of facility, age of facility, assessment status, dates assessments were performed, condition of facility, and service life. The pilot also provides pictures of the facility as well as relevant documentation such as assessment reports.
