GIS Support for FAA's UIS Facility Management

—Robert Hallett, USDOT/RITA/Volpe Center

The Volpe National Transportation Systems Center was tasked with a project from the FAA to do a pilot study on facility management using GIS. The goal of the project was to determine what types of things could be done with GIS to manage facilities at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. The FAA Unstaffed Infrastructure Sustainment program office was already compiling data into a database from a graphic user interface developed for use by field teams to digitally capture important information about the facilities during routine assessments. The result was a large amount of data with no way for management to practically use it. The ultimate purpose of the pilot study was to make a web based application that an end user would be able to use to make sense of all the data being uploaded into the database, thus improving the overall performance of the national airspace system.
