Inside the Smithsonian: Managing Building Data with GIS

—Scott Krajenta, Smithsonian Institution

The Smithsonian maintains more than 700 facilities at more than 90 locations across the globe. Since 2004, a concerted effort to maintain accurate floor plans and related space data at every facility has culminated in the successful cataloging of over 12 million square feet of space. An internal web-based application, SI Explorer, provides institution staff with self-guided access to this information. This year, Scott Krajenta has begun to completely revamp SI Explorer, and for the first time implement an ArcSDE geodatabase to store all the floor plans and location-related data. He will present the successes and challenges he has encountered to date while adapting BISDM version 2 to Smithsonian use, building an efficient process for moving AutoCAD-based construction drawings into a GIS, and displaying data via the web using the Adobe Flex API.
