Best Practices for Mission Applications

Leveraging and Integrating GIS Server Technology into FMCSA's A&I Online Website

—Sara Secunda, Volpe Center, RITA, USDOT

USDOT's Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, in support of The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's (FMCSA) Analysis Division, develop and maintain the Analysis and Information (A&I) Online website, which provides extensive national, state and local statistics and information on Motor Carrier safety. The statistics and analysis are mainly presented in the form of online charts, graphs and reports for the Motor Carrier Industry stakeholders to support analytically sound, safety-conscious decisions. While the website has long had a small mapping component to geographically display and query crash data, there are many other areas of the website that benefit from having the data presented geographically. This presentation depicts how FMCSA and the Volpe Center are leveraging and integrating GIS Server technology into this large, data rich website as another tool to assist users in displaying and understanding Motor Carrier safety data. GIS web technology is being used in the form of separate interactive mapping applications, as well as integrating mapping into the current data query pages. The current applications have been developed using the ArcGIS Server .NET web ADF and are now in the process of being updated and expanded using ESRI's Silverlight Web ADF.
