Mapping 10,000 Dock Permits on Lake Lanier (without a GPS)

—Russell Lundstrum, MGIS Park Ranger, Lake Sidney Lanier

Using the Geocoding tool in ArcMap, digitized paper maps, a temporary lookup table and a relational database with the data to map, a custom Address Locator can be made to create map layer. The polyline layer is made of segments encoded with distances instead of typical address numbers. The custom address information previously existed only on scattered, unsearchable paper maps. A by-product of this project is a data-driven symbology layer based on geographic attributes. Points are displayed as tick marks placed at a perpendicular angle derived from the azimuth between adjacent points.
