Building National Spatial Data Infrastructures

The New SDSFIE 3.0: What is Compliance?

—Samuel Hopper, Department of Defense

Implementations of previous versions of Spatial Data Standard for Facilities, Environment, and Infrastructure (SDSFIE) varied widely because users employed considerable latitude in interpreting the standard. Lessons learned from pilot efforts to translate these legacy schemas to SDSFIE 3.0 have clearly shown that these variations are more pervasive than previously thought, and laborious to contend with. To limit such variations in the implementation of SDSFIE 3.0, compliance criteria will be clearly defined based on enterprise end-use requirements, and consensus-based governance structures will be created at Department and Component levels to enforce compliance. This presentation describes 1) the approach that will be used to develop a comprehensive set of compliance criteria in the form of written metrics and guidance and 2) processes that will be used to ensure these metrics and guidance are followed within all organizations of the Department utilizing SDSFIE 3.0.
