Next Generation Government: Gov 2.0 and Beyond

Two EPA Case Studies in Gov 2.0

—Kim Balassiano, EPA

The follow-on to EPA's flagship web mapping application Window to My Environment is MyEnvironment (www.epa.gov/myenvironment). MyEnvironment launched on Earth Day 2009 in the midst of the Agency's Web 2.0 coming out party. A major goal of the application has been to extend the dialogue on environmentalism to include the voices of the public. Standard web and mapping technologies are used to accomplish this and the proof is in the pudding. Another experiment in Gov 2.0 has been EPA's Watershed Central wiki (https://wiki.epa.gov/watershed2/index.php/Main_Page). Lessons learned in this wiki - designed to encourage local-to-local watershed manager partnering and exchange - include trying to keep the community as open as possible. Join me for a demo of each and discussion of these and other EPA forays into Gov 2.0.
