Leveraging your GIS as a Collaborative Platform

Using GIS as a platform for comprehensive asbestos sampling and management

—Eric Stetser, Spatial Systems Associates, Inc.

The National Institutes of Health is using GIS as a key technology in the inventory and managment of asbestos containing building materials. Using this approach, a campus wide effort is being undertaken to establish a definitive baseline of all suspected building materials on the Bethesda campus. The resulting geodatabase will include sample results, digital photos, and mapping of homogeneous building materials. This effort will support the building planners, construction managers, construction workers and occupational safety activities of NIH with regard to asbestos. This work builds upon prior work by the US State Department's Facets program.
