Using GPS Cameras to Manage Real Property Assets

—Roger Miller, US Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District - Real Estate Division

To show how I have built a process/system of using cameras that have built in GPS/Compass and Memo capacity to document and account for all Real Property (buildings and structures) within civil works projects within my area of responsibility that is spread out through 6 states. This has enabled our district to geo locate and account for over 6000 assets located at 41 different projects (from a radio tower to a major dam complex with its adjacent recreational areas) . Each project visited has an organized set of folders showing all the locations visited and the resulting pictures and processed files which are then utilized by GIS staff for generating mapping and spatial analysis products used to help plan, operate, and manage our districts projects. The use of GIS software to analyze our districts cadastral data coupled with the data generated by the GPS cameras has assisted in updating other record management databases and systems as well to tie Real Property to the correct records in our organizations land ownership parcel data and associated outgrant data for 3rd party interest holders when applicable.
