HunchLab Leverages Spatial Analysis to Monitor Crime Patterns in Philadelphia
Track: Situational Awareness
Authors: Mike Uriciuoli, Robert Cheetham

The Philadelphia Police Department uses a variety of web-based GIS tools to increase their situational awareness and facilitate proactive policing. One of those applications is HunchLab, a geographic data mining and alerting system that combines ArcGIS Server technology with spatial statistics to automatically sift through millions of police incident records on a daily basis and analyze changes in the prevalence of crime and other incidents by comparing the most recent events against historical data for each location. When HunchLab detects an emerging cluster of crime incidents, it dispatches e-mail alerts that enable designated law enforcement personnel to examine the incidents contributing to the spike in greater detail and use this information to proactively plan a response strategy. This presentation will demonstrate how HunchLab is helping the Philadelphia Police Department monitor critical changes in crime patterns, including those incidents that might otherwise threaten local or national security.
