Web-Based Firearms Analysis System Traces Crime Guns More Effectively
Track: Situational Awareness
Authors: Alison McGinnis, Robert Cheetham

One of the most important precepts of Homeland Security is to facilitate communication and cooperation between multiple organizations with similar missions. The Philadelphia Police Department worked with the Philadelphia Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to develop a web-based Firearms Analysis System (FAS) that enables police officers and detectives to create an electronic record when a gun is seized and forward that record to the National Tracing Center for tracing. FAS also provides GIS mapping and analytical capabilities to help law enforcement officials analyze and visualize the locations of gun seizures in the City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. ArcGIS Server technology provides high performance mapping, reporting and search capabilities. This presentation will walk through the FAS application and describe the ongoing efforts to extend its functionality, including the ability to display firearms data in as pathway maps, paired incidents, density (heat) maps and clustering displays.
