Transparency and Trust: Community Oriented Policing Through Public Crime Mapping
Track: Situational Awareness
Authors: Talal Albagdadi

Sharing data with your community can help build trust and reduce crime. Web based public crime mapping tools enable policing agencies to reach out to their citizenry and extend the arm of law enforcement. Displaying current crime data by location can yield rapid insights into the challenges officers face every day. This type of transparency is critical in maintaining an informational flow between the public and the police that serve them. Multi-jurisdictional and regional applications can be quickly established in a Web based mapping environment and enhance data sharing between agencies. High levels of data security can now also be maintained while still enabling your community to have access to information on local crime activity.
