3D Tracker: ArcView Three-Dimensional Application for Real-Time Subsea Pipe Laying

While pipelayers previously had to rely on two-dimensional paper maps, they can now follow vessels and pipeline movements in the terrain in real time on a monitor. Because of the difficult terrain on the western coast of Norway, Statoil saw the need for a tool that could cut accidents and save time and resources. An application was developed that visualizes the ROV and the other vessels, along with the pipeline being laid, in both two dimensions and three dimensions, based on real-time data from the navigation system. The application was developed using ArcView GIS with the ArcView 3D Analyst and ArcView Tracking Analyst extensions.
