Two years ago, Rock Hill Telephone Company determined their existing CAD system was outdated and they started a search for a new system. Both CAD and GIS systems were analyzed. Rock Hill chose an ArcInfo-based GIS system for managing their telecommunications network and connectivity model and completed a successful implementation. Rock Hill analyzed and solved many potential roadblocks commonly seen in CAD to GIS switches such as legacy data migration for connectivity, symbolization, and attribution. In addition, other areas including product customization and integration with other operational support systems are detailed.

This presentation will help CAD users looking to move to a GIS system understand the requirements for a successful migration. The solution for success is defined including risk mitigation. Attendees should walk away with a road map that allows a successful migration from CAD to GIS, both from the user and systems integrator perspectives.
