Cal Poly Pomona launched a "GIS Literate Campus Initiative" in 1998 aimed at incorporating GIS into teaching and research across campus. This initiative is aimed at advancing GIS academic programming to provide instruction, research opportunities, and outreach (technology transfer) to students, staff, and faculty. Serving as the hub for activities related to the initiative, the Center for Geographic Information Systems Research (CGISR) opened in the fall of 1998. With the help of CGISR and other campus labs using GIS technology, Cal Poly Pomona is actively expanding GIS research and applications in many programs and departments including Geography, Anthropology, Biology, Geology, Landscape Architecture, Urban & Regional Planning, Engineering, International Business and Marketing, and Computer Science.
