Raytheon is developing a number of GIS-based tools and algorithmic techniques to address the comprehensive environmental monitoring needs of Brazil's System for the Vigilance of the Amazon (SIVAM). We discuss our approach to five specific applications: flood potential, disease risk, soil loss susceptibility, habitat suitability, and observed and modeled mercury distribution. The presentation highlights the underlying models, confronts the available data, and examines the resulting GIS design.
