Abstract: This paper presents the implementation of an integrated GIS for Facilities Management at UVA. Facilities Management is responsible for construction and maintenance and utilities (generation and distribution) at the university. The project focuses on trying to integrate utilities information, spatial and relational, and distribute the same over the intranet. The project also brings together spatial data from 2 additional sources – property & real estate and space inventory. The paper explores the challenges and opportunities in implementing a geodatabase in a traditionally CAD environment where it is absolutely essential to exchange information, AutoCAD drawings, with external contractors & consultants.
