Abstract
Creating a GIS Community: DoN GIS Communications Network

The Department of Navy (DoN) GIS community is creating a communications network to centralize it's GIS information and knowledge. The goal of this effort is to set up a seamless, interactive process for sharing GIS information, preserving institutional knowledge, and bringing together members that are isolated by geography or organizational divisions. This paper presents the community's online tool, DoN GIS Communications Network (CommNet), that allows members to share GIS data, project information, contract language, lessons learned, and contact information. With this approach, community members define content, duplication of effort is minimized, and investments are maximized.
