AbstractOptimization of Network Alignment for Light Rail Transit: Phoenix, Arizona Track: Transportation and Logistics Author(s): Taruna Tayal The current alignment of the proposed light-rail for Central Phoenix East Valley will require people to commute to the transit stations using different modes of transportation, increasing the time and cost of travel. This will discourage people from taking transit for home-based work trips. This research tries to find the factors that influence the ridership of light-rail transit. A balance should be created between the residential and employment centers served by the light-rail. A model is developed to create a balance between the costs and benefits by minimizing the travel time and maximizing the weights assigned to the nodes and links.
