AbstractDeveloping Navy and Marine Corps Installation Encroachment Strategies Using GIS Track: Defense and Intelligence Author(s): Brian VanBockern The growing threat of land and airspace encroachment on military installations has become a serious impediment to operations and training. To stem the tide and mitigate some of its effects, the Navy has sought to use GIS in cooperation with adjacent municipal areas. A data sharing effort and the use of GPS technologies are key to identifying encroachment and beginning the mitigation process. Im proper manipulation of the data can be the key stumbling block. Improper use of the data and various inaccuracies can seriously degrade the chances of effectively fighting the encroachment. Lessons learned are provided.
