AbstractKopplin Gamma Radiation Survey Track: Mining and Geosciences Author(s): Mark Beaman, Philippe Tissot, Jon Brandt This paper describes a radiation survey conducted by the Conrad Blucher Institute and the Railroad Commission of Texas at the abandoned Kopplin uranium mine in South Texas. The presence of radionuclide contamination was confirmed and characterized using a gamma scintillometer, GIS, and GPS. Mapping includes all sampled locations characterized by point gamma ray values and a contour map displaying gamma emission gradients throughout the site. The survey allowed the identification of general areas above background radiation levels possibly requiring future remediation and historical features of the mining operation such as the approximate location of the former ore pad.
