AbstractUsing GIS to Ease Encroachment Pressures at U.S. Navy Installations Track: Defense and Intelligence Author(s): Christopher Spagnuolo As landscapes become increasingly altered by human uses and activities, relatively unchanged landscapes on military installations are bearing the burden of supporting numerous protected and endangered species. The United States Navy Region Northwest manages several installations facing endangered species and encroachment issues. The Commander of Navy Region Northwest requested that tools be developed to support endangered species management activities that could be demonstrated in the northwest region. This was accomplished by using ArcGIS to perform a critical habitat analysis at a selected installation. The results of the analysis were distributed to regional Navy natural resource managers via an ArcIMS-based Web site.
