AbstractMainbreaks Tracking and Analysis: Using GIS to Translate Infrastructure and Maintenance Data into a Prioritized Replacement Program for Long Beach Water Department Track: Water Distribution, Wastewater, and Stormwater Author(s): Eric Leung, Alan Hooper Long Beach Water Department (LBWD) has well established GIS and Work Order Systems (WOS) that are used in the daily operations of the Department. The WOS includes many years of mainbreaks data and has been used primarily as an information system for the maintenance crews and for customer service representatives. This historical information provides a valuable source of data that can be used to forecast break events and allow a proactive maintenance program. The WOS and GIS contained different attribute data but without any common point of reference. The data in the Access based WOS was extracted and related to pipe and parcel data in the GIS by means of queries interrogating address, pipe diameter and pipe size. The objective was to provide an automated system that would update the GIS layer every night when the daily maintenance data has been entered, while not interfering with either data set. The mainbreaks data was then evaluated via a series of user controlled analyses and graphical output. Correlation between breaks and the significant variables (e.g., water temperature, pipe age, pipe material, soil type, depth of burial, and customers) was then used to identify pipes with a high priority for replacement. This was translated into a CIP taking account of annual funding and required performance levels. This was the first step of a continuing program of GIS implementation that will continue with migration to ArcGIS 8.1 and the development of other operational applications. * Long Beach Water Department + CH2M HILL Eric Leung Long Beach Water Department 1800 East Wardlow Rd Long Beach , CA 90807-4931 Phone: (562) 570 2347 Fax: (562) 492 9631 E-mail: Eric_Leung@lbwater.org Alan Hooper CH2M HILL 3 HUTTON CENTRE DR - SUITE 200 Santa Ana 92707 USA Phone: 714-429-2020 Fax: 714-429-2050 E-mail: ahooper@ch2m.com |
