AbstractUniform Cadastral System Within GIS for Land Surveyors Track: Surveying Author(s): Edward Riley, Cody Condron, Micheal Brown In recent years, GIS systems have become more widely talked about and implemented in the surveying community. At the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors' annual convention in the fall of 2001 a questionnaire was distributed to the surveyors to gauge their involvement with GIS. The questionnaire consisted of 10 questions, all multiple choice. The goals of the questionnaire were to determine how the surveying community sees their involvement in GIS, what knowledge the surveying community has about GIS, and to determine the surveying community's current level of involvement with GIS. The answers on the questionnaire showed that some knowledge and experience with GIS is present. This raises another question. If GIS is becoming more widely used, why are there no standards for the development of these systems within the surveying community? This lack of standards is causing incompatibility and accuracy problems. Furthermore, these problems are affecting the surveying community's perception of geographic information systems. This paper will discuss a uniform cadastral system for GIS systems as it pertains to land surveyors.
