AbstractAssessing Quality of Life by Integrating Census Data and Remote Sensing Imagery in the City of Long Beach, CA Track: Remote Sensing Imagery Author(s): Valerie Muller This study explores the relationship between socio-economic data obtained from the 1990 US Census and environmental data acquired from IKONOS satellite imagery. Thirty-four variables from the census data were evaluated with Principal Component Analysis to extract the variables responsible for the most variation within the data set. Four meter IKONOS satellite imagery was employed to create a Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and calculate surface temperature for the study area. The socio-economic data were then overlaid with the environmental data to detect the spatial relationship between socio-economic variables and environmental factors. The study area encompasses the City of Long Beach, the second largest city in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area, with a population of over 429,000 in 1990 and almost 13,000 sq miles.
