Abstract

HAZUS-Generated Earthquake Loss Estimates for the San Francisco Bay Area, California
Track: EMS, Fire, Disaster Management
Author(s): James Buika, Kevin Miller

The purpose of this paper is to present research results of HAZUS-modeled earthquake loss estimates for probable earthquakes generated by 12 earthquake faults in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. HAZUS is the Federal Emergency Management Agency's earthquake risk assessment software system available to local government and others. Together, these earthquake loss scenarios represent one of the first regional demonstrations of risk assessment using the HAZUS model. The purpose of this risk assessment project has been to provide local government and corporate decision makers with the necessary scientific, engineering, and loss data required to prioritize seismic mitigation at the local government and corporate level.
