AbstractHow GIS Can Move from Desktop to Field Track: New Technology and Technology Integration Author(s): Richard Lewis A new generation of powerful PDA devices, such as Pocket C, Palm, and Windows-based field computers, give new flexibility and power to in-field GIS data collection. Now GIS can be brought to the field rather than bringing the field to GIS. The field data collector can visually match new and old assets to electronic maps reflecting ArcView themes. Accuracy is increased and data collection is enhanced. Attached GPS allows data to be corrected in the field by real-time means or postprocessed after the field session. Esri's ArcPad is among the software choices for the PDA unit.
