AbstractMapping Out a Safer Community: Safe Routes to School Track: K-12 Education and Library Science Author(s): David Martin This presentation will describe a community GIS project to improve the overall safety of Detroit students while also building their skills in the use of GIS technology, exposing them to career options and engaging them in citizenship and community problem solving. The project involves three components: (1) GIS technology training, mapping, and analysis by students, (2) the facilitation of a community problem-solving process, and (3) implementation of public safety improvements. Eighth grade students use ArcView, ArcExplorer, and ArcPad with portable computing devices to map out a plan to enhance safety to and from school, which they present to community leaders.
