AbstractBuilding a GIS Bridge Between Higher Education and Local Governments Track: Universities and Higher Education Author(s): Sergei Andronikov This paper discusses an opportunity of creating tight links between systems of higher education and local governments through GIS technology. The Clarksville/Montgomery County GIS Center (CMC GIS Center) created at APSU, Tennessee, almost four years ago is a good example of collaboration for mutual benefits. Practical results, real-life projects, improved system of training and education, and cost-effectiveness of GIS enterprise structure is demonstrated. The pros and cons of ArcGIS and ArcIMS applications for the needs of local governments, education, and the public are discussed. The future opportunities for the development, growth, and implementation of a GIS technology within the community are presented.
