AbstractGIS in Planning: Inventorying and Assessing a Sidewalk System Track: Transportation and Logistics Author(s): Kendis Willet A pedestrian friendly environment is often overlooked in many of today's cities. This paper presents how a metropolitan planning organization applies GIS in the development of a sidewalk maintenance program in Duluth, Minnesota. Sidewalks and areas that generate high amounts of sidewalk usage were inventoried, assessed, and analyzed for a 76-square-mile area. Ten areas were identified as areas of high sidewalk usage including retail areas, parks, and churches. The paper explores data gathering methods, sidewalk evaluation, and overlay/proximity analysis, which allows decision makers and city officials to easily identify sidewalk corridors having the greatest need for attention.
