AbstractThe US/ICOMOS Cultural Landscape Analysis Initiative Track: Ecology, Archaeology, and Conservation Author(s): Douglas Comer Each archaeological or historic site is preserved or destroyed by virtue of its position within an ecology that is both natural and cultural. The US/ICOMOS Cultural Landscape Analysis Initiative, supported by Esri, is employing GIS and remote sensing technology to inventory natural and cultural features and then analyze relationships among them in order to understand such ecologies. This provides the basis for effective site management and a greatly enriched context in which the findings of archaeological fieldwork can be better interpreted. Examples are provided from archaeological and historic sites in Jordan, Ghana, Turkey, and Laos. Douglas Comer Cultural Site Research and Management 4303 N.
