AbstractMoving from the Desktop to the Web: A Strategy for Application Development Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Stan Grochowski Pierce County GIS has for a few years now used a desktop application called QuickView to support Planning and Land Services permit counter personnel. QuickView has been successful in allowing counter personnel to quickly look at pertinent information at or near a particular site (parcel). Other departments within the County have noticed the functionality of QuickView and its potential usefulness for their own departments and have requested their own version of this application. Current plans are for QuickView to be used by four different departments, each with separate data needs, and for additional use by other cities within Pierce County. To make deployment of QuickView easier and less costly, it was decided that a Web version of QuickView would be developed. This paper will discuss the process of converting a desktop application to a Web application and the how the application is designed to make it easier to customize for each unique department without having to rewrite the application each time. Currently QuickView is a PowerBuilder application and is being served up to the Web through ArcIMS.
