Abstract

Geodatabases: The Key to Water Utility GIS Success?
Track: Water Distribution, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Scott Cattran

ArcGIS Water Utilities Data Models can provide a framework for a complete GIS solution for water/sewer/stormwater utilities. Implementing or modifying the data model to reflect your organizational work flow is key to establishing a foundation for a successful GIS implementation. Utilities are considering how their GIS will interface with customer information systems, maintenance management systems, and other key applications that already contain data and are critical for day-to-day operations. This presentation will provide a decision making process for database modeling and discuss critical decisions made by five different water and sewer utilities. Data migration strategies from shapefiles/coverages to geodatabases and out-of-the-box ArcMap Utility Network Analysis tools will be demonstrated to illustrate the benefit of this new data format.
