AbstractMetropolitan Council 2001 Transit Database Update Track: Transportation and Logistics Author(s): Mike Dolbow In early 2001, the Metropolitan Council conducted a major update of the transit GIS data for the seven-county Twin Cities Metropolitan Area in Minnesota. The existing databases for the region's bus system were outdated and spatially inaccurate. The Council's GIS department used a custom ArcView extension to solve this problem by registering all bus routes to a local street centerline data set. The resulting databases represented a significant improvement, both in terms of spatial accuracy and associated attributes. This paper presents the methods used to update the system as well as the lessons learned about organizing transit data within a GIS.
