AbstractMigrating CAD Based Facilities Management Systems to the ArcGIS Environment Track: Electric and Gas Author(s): Mark Varenhorst Many utilities that have implemented computer-aided drafting (CAD)-based facilities management and mapping systems are exploring the possibility of migrating their present system to the ArcGIS environment. Planning a successful migration involves careful analysis of the three major components that make up a mapping system--the applications that directly or indirectly work with the mapping data, the system interfaces, and finally the data itself. This paper examines the issues involved with migrating data from a CAD-based system to a geodatabase. Case studies of successful migrations are offered as examples for exploring critical issues including Ø Ensuring the quality and integrity of data Ø Retaining the same "look and feel" Ø Estimating the amount of postmigration "cleanup" work Mark Varenhorst MESA Solutions Utilities Practice 7800 Highway 20 West Tower Building - 4th Floor Huntsville , AL 35806 USA Phone: 256.864.0400 Fax: 256.864.0251 E-mail: mvarenhorst@mesahq.com |
