AbstractMetadata Automation Through Collaborative Online Tools Track: Metadata and Data Publishing Author(s): Peter Shikli, Ryan Tyler Metadata is transitioning from mapmakers' notes about the map they made to an organization's reporting tool about all the maps is manages. As metadata migrates from the desktop to a resource anyone can access across the Internet, an organization will have to form policies and procedures regarding this emerging asset. Whereas the Federal Geographic Data Committee metadata standard is the right starting point, it allows for a great deal of flexibility. This paper presents some of the tradeoffs and consequences, some of the online tools available to automate metadata management, and some lessons learned implementing it for organizations like our client the City of Torrance. Special emphasis wil be given to an enhanced data theme management extension built on top of Esri's Metadata Manager.
