AbstractGIS Certificate Programs Track: Universities and Higher Education Author(s): Paul Zandbergen There are presently close to 100 colleges and universities in North America offering a GIS certificate program. This paper will present the results of a recent comprehensive comparison of these certificate programs including an evaluation of target audience, entrance requirements, cost, duration, program requirements, course offerings, equipment and software applications used, instructors, and method of delivery. Results indicate a wide diversity among the existing programs, with a trend toward specialization in terms of the area of application (natural resources, urban planning, transportation, etc.) and the position type (technician, analyst, manager, etc.). The paper will conclude with a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of current GIS certificate programs and the role they can play in the certification of GIS professionals.
