AbstractAn Analysis of Public Safety and GIS Technology Track: Homeland Security Author(s): Rick Wimberly, Virginia Roberson In the wake of September 11, 2001, public safety officials are now realizing a greater need for geographical emergency notification. Officers and response teams have utilized GIS technology, among other things, to prevent panic. A few days after September 11, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg (NC) Police Department used GeoNotify (employing MapObjects) to notify their community that nearby construction crews would be blasting. After the geographic call-out (using the City's data, the system automatically mapped out a one half-mile radius of the blasting area), there was no panic, and the 911 center received no calls of concern.
