AbstractThinking Spatially About Child Abuse and Neglect Track: Health and Human Services Author(s): Bridgette Lery ArcView 8.1 and 3.2a, demographic data, and administrative foster care data are used to map year 2000 incidence of foster care entry and poverty rates in 8 California counties by zip code. Results show a visually striking relationship between poverty and rates of foster care. Next, foster placements of children entering foster care in California in 2000 are geocoded and mapped in relation to their removal neighborhoods. Distances between removal and placement addresses are calculated. Results show that large portions of children are placed outside of their neighborhoods and outside of their home counties. .
