AbstractVisualizing Urban History Using GIS Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Barbara Parmenter Visualizing places and the way they evolve is a fundamental part of what planners, urban designers, landscape architects, and geographers do. Without being able to visualize a region as a whole, it is often difficult for citizens to plan for the future. This paper describes the design and construction of a GIS database that tracks the history of landscape changes in Austin, Texas, going back to the early 20th century. The database enables viewers to see spatial change over time and understand economic, cultural, and political contexts. The paper discussed design and implementation issues and outcomes.
