AbstractWater on the Plains: Safeguarding Kansas Drinking Water Using ArcIMS Track: Water Resources Author(s): Robert Bradford, Amber Shultz The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), originally passed by the U.S. Congress in 1974 and amended in 1996, mandates the protection of drinking water sources in the United States. In Kansas, more than 800 sources from lakes, rivers, and wells supply drinking water for more than 2.5 million people. The SDWA requires all states to prepare assessments that summarize potential contaminants and the susceptibility of each source area. Using ArcIMS and Oracle, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Source Water Assessment Tool streamlines data collection and analysis by allowing individuals responsible for local public water supplies to enter and update data remotely, as well as generate susceptibility maps for analysis in a secure environment.
