AbstractAgricultural Modeling for Economic Development Activities in Agrarian Track: Application Development Author(s): Randy How, Russell Cowart, John Rodowca Regional economic planners in developing countries have many challenges as they analyze existing land use patterns and promote alternative economic activities. This paper examines the GLEAM Tool (Generalized Land-use Evaluation and Management), an ArcGIS extension designed to model the agronomic and economic factors for alternative development scenarios to help make those tasks more manageable. It is developed in Microsoft Visual Basic and uses ArcView Spatial Analyst and SQL Server. The application enables iterative decision making procedures to evaluate environmental risks, crop profitability, and optimal distribution patterns. The discussion includes programming approaches and the implementation challenges of software development projects in developing countries.
