AbstractEnhancing Solid Refuse Collection Operations with GIS Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Sal Aguilar, Jr. This paper will disclose the approach used to meet the challenge of improving solid resources collection operations for all City of Los Angeles residents. This approach has been achieved using GIS principles and applications. Prior to GIS-developed applications, spatial analysis was nonexistent and collection route maps were manually generated. Specifically, the paper will address the following areas: continuous and point-to-point collection routing, container distribution routing, route maps on PDAs, call center address verification, and operations analysis and reporting. The deployment of the GIS applications in the Solid Resources Collection Division operations has improved the following areas: more on-route time, better customer service, and better use of operational resources.
