AbstractGrafenwoehr Training Area Historic Imagery Analysis Track: Environment Management Author(s): Nathaniel Whelan For 55 years, Germany's Grafenwoehr Training Area (GTA) has been the U.S. Army Europe's (USAREUR) premier live fire training area in Europe. The USAREUR Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) program uses GIS to understand GTA environmental and resource trends. GIS analysis of 20 historic photo data sets covering GTA, dating from 1945 U.S. WWII bombing photos, were scanned, georectified, and mosaicked. Vector data creation detailing vegetative and training area changes aid in scientifically calculating impacts and trends of military activity. Recent designation by the European Union of GTA as a "Flora and Fauna Habitat" increase the importance of this GIS initiative.
