AbstractHomeland Defense Sets the Standard for Spatial Data Track: Homeland Security Author(s): John Auble For several years, most data standard initiatives have been biased to meet the requirements of the data maintainers. Although this community, led by the USGS, FGDC, and others, has worked to reach consensus, the diverse approaches have left us with a series of "drafts" and "revisions." Recently the public safety community took the lead and began defining a new set of standards based on operational requirements. This emphasis has added clarity and an important dimension to the standards debate that has refocused the community on content to meet application requirements, rather than the loosely defined goal of "data sharing."
