Abstract
Building Web Services with ArcIMS: Technical and Commercial Dimensions

Spatial Web services present an exciting new approach to building dynamic, distributed applications with ArcIMS. Web services emphasize the publishing and discovery (e.g., through the Geography Network) and utilization of specific geodata sets and geoprocessing capabilities such that they can be accessed over the Web by a range of client applications. Technical challenges of Web services include developing effective architectures and interfaces, managing scalability, providing accountability, and maintaining appropriate quality of service. Business challenges include recognizing markets, devising revenue models, and leveraging interoperability. This presentation describes these challenges and the new ArcIMS extensions such as the Route Server and Metadata Servers.
