Abstract
GIS for Utility and Local Government Support of Homeland Security

Utilities and Local government must be proactive to protect both the populace and infrastructure within their geographic domain. Now more than ever, the need for heightened security for public places, public health, and essential infrastructure is critical. GIS data and technology provide important solutions to help address these demands. Uninterrupted and secure access to location-based information on demand, anytime, and anywhere is necessary to empower collaboration and the ability to plan, coordinate, and make better informed emergency management decisions. Finally, fail-safe backup and alternate access strategies for the primary IT hardware, software, and GIS data assets must also exist.
