AbstractArcView Softeware's Feature Analyst Extension: A Forest Service Beta Test Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management Author(s): Dave Vanderzanden, Dave Opitz The influx of new high-resolution satellite image sources (IKONOS, OrbView-3, Quickbird 2) provides an opportunity to map ground features that could not be achieved using medium resolution imagery (Landsat,SPOT). However, standard per-pixel classifiers (ISODATA, Maxclas) have proven ineffective at extracting information from these new data sources. Feature Analyst, a software product developed by Visual Learning Systems, provides an automated tool to use with high-resolution imagery and shows promise for more detailed information extraction. This software utilizes spatial context as well as spectral information and has machine learning capabilities to revise initial errors. The USDA Forest Service Remote Sensing Applications Center is beta testing this software on several data sets. This paper will present the results of these tests.
