AbstractAdvanced 3-D Visualization of Forest Growth Projections with ArcGIS Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management Author(s): Gary Huber, David Buckley, John Cawardin, Chris Hanson, Bryan McFadden Space Imaging has recently completed development of an ArcGIS Software-based Ecosystem Decision Support System (DSS) for Fort A.P. Hill, a 76,000-acre U.S. Army training installation located in Virginia. The DSS uses ecosystem management guidelines to develop stand prescriptions, apply growth and yield projections, and plan forestry activities to achieve desired military training objectives. A key component of the DSS is the development of an advanced 3D visualization tool that allows staff to view the output of the growth and yield model representing different management scenarios. Working with Fort A.P. Hill and 3D Nature staff, Space Imaging has developed a sophisticated 3D visualization application for ArcGIS. This application utilizes projections from the USFS Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) growth and yield model, allowing forestry staff to visualize temporal projections of forest growth. Coupled with a silvicultural prescription model, users can quickly visualize how prescribed management actions will appear in the future. The visualization application utilizes a custom version of the new Visual Nature Studio program from 3D Nature (Arvada, Colorado). This paper will review the issues and requirements of integrating advanced visualization software with ArcGIS, focusing on geodatabase integration approaches. A demonstration will be provided that illustrates the realtime nature of the visualization capabilities.
